Can a recipe for waffles be healthy?
Confession: When my six-year-old showed up at my bed asking for waffles this morning, I groaned. Waffles are a pain to make and the recipe is not very healthy…until now!
At Foodlets, my mission is creating new versions of favorite family foods. That’s how we’ll raise kids who love and appreciate fresh food! Recipes at Foodlets are:
- easier
- healthier
- more kid-friendly
All that said, I’m not gonna lie to you. Waffles are still waffles.
You can’t cheat the system and throw them in a sheet pan to politely bake in the oven like my pancake transformation.
But you can make them much healthier. And trust me, the flavor is so gorgeous, we’ve got kid-friendly in the bag.

With a handful of pantry staples you can make fluffy, flavorful and healthy waffles for kids!
Ingredients
1 cup whole-wheat flour
1 cup regular white flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
2 tablespoons chia seeds
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1/2 cup vegetable or olive oil
2 cups vanilla yogurt (any kind of yogurt: reduced-fat or full-fat)
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla
Optional: Top with fresh (unsweetened) whipped cream and fruit
Instructions
Begin heating waffle iron.
Mix ingredients together in a large bowl. Whisk until smooth, about 30 seconds.
Add batter to hot waffle grill (see instruction manual for quantity but often about 1 cup).
Cook according to waffle maker instructions, typically about 4 minutes.
That’s it! This healthy waffle recipe comes together quickly. Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for several days but trust me, if your kids don’t eat everything at breakfast, they’ll want to eat these waffles for snack. Straight up. No toppings. Just holding a cold waffle in their hand, heading out the door to play.
