My mother-in-law introduced us to homemade hot fudge sauce and we’ll never go back!
Impossibly thick, rich and decadent, this hot fudge sauce is also a great gift idea.
What You Need to Make Hot Fudge Sauce
You don’t need any special equipment. Just a pan, a whisk and some jars for storage.
My MIL swears by reusing jars from Marie’s Homemade salad dressing but you could also buy little jelly jars and lids. We’ve done both. Also, these adorable stickers and tags really make the whole look.
Store your homemade sauce in the fridge. It’ll harden when cool so just pop the jar in the microwave for 20 seconds or so (without the lid) to make it soft enough to drizzle on your favorite ice cream or cake.

This recipe makes 3 cups. Double it if you want enough for gifts.
Ingredients
- 1 cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
Instructions
- Put all the ingredients into a pot over medium heat. Stir until the butter melts and the sauce looks rich and creamy. This only takes a few minutes.
- Pour into jars and keep in the fridge. When the sauce cools it’ll harden. Reheat the whole jar (without the lid) in the microwave when you’re ready to drizzle over ice cream or cake.
Bonus Fun Facts: Who Invented the Hot Fudge Sundae?
The idea for pouring hot fudge on ice cream dates back to 1906! But you’ll never believe how much drama is behind the ice cream sundae itself.
