Kale chips are the perfect kale starter food.
For kids (or adults) who don’t like vegetables, I defy them to turn these down. Crispy, salty and satisfying — not to mention packed with nutrients — this kind of kale will make believers out of your brood.
What You Need to Make Kale Chips
It’s a shockingly small list:
- fresh kale
- olive oil
- salt
You could even use canola or vegetable oil but I like olive oil for the flavor and health benefits.
The results are impossibly light and crispy. All that oil and salt make each chip so satisfying, while the kale itself is loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber and even calcium! Kale chips are a pretty unbeatable side with any lunch, one that my kids — and even my husband — hoover down ASAP every single time.
How to Make Kale Chips
- Wash the kale. Then strip the leaves from the stems. Discard the stems into your compost bin.
2. Rip the leaves apart into bite sized pieces. Then arrange on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
3. Drizzle with olive oil. Massage the oil into the leaves.
4. Spread the leaves evenly. Sprinkle with salt.
5. Pop into a 400 degree F oven and bake for about 15 minutes. Mine are crispy by this time. I don’t need to flip them. HOWEVER, depending on how crowded your pan gets, you may need to flip or otherwise stir your kale chips. Or bake for another few minutes.
