I NEED A NEW CATEGORY, called Partial Failures. That’s how I’d describe this dish but it’s not what you think. Phoebe is a sworn rice hater and carefully molding her portion of wild rice into the shape of a flower (using a cookie cutter and allowing it to set in the fridge overnight) made absolutely no difference. In fact, she spit out each bite that included even one grain. (Cue mom’s sigh, eye roll and “absolutely not” three-in-one move.) She’s like the Princess and the Pea this one, except her talent is detecting rice. And with terrible table manners. The fish itself however, was a huge hit. Especially with lemon and olives. Even Estelle liked it.
This recipe came straight from the Food Network Magazine and if I did make it again, I’d add some sauce. It was a little dull with just the garlicky breadcrumbs and the artichokes got dried out. Either half a cup of stock or a much more generous drizzle of olive oil would improve the whole thing for me. But as I said, the little guys were all over it. They’re actually pretty good at eating seafood. In fact, their super Italian nursery school serves a freshly prepared fish lunch every Friday. (Last week, I didn’t realize that Friday was an Italian holiday and school would be canceled until I noticed that they ate fish on Thursday.) Rice, however, is apparently not a regular part of the menu. Too bad, we could use some help around here.
